The Dental Patient’s Pocket Guide to Endodontic Technology

The Dental Patient's Pocket Guide to Endodontic Technology

1.) Apex Locator

When you visit our offices, you’ll notice numerous technologies that we use to perform various procedures. One of the machines we use is called an apex locator, and it is used to locate the tooth’s apex, which is actually the end of the root. The apex locator allows us to precisely identify – within half, or even a quarter of a millimeter – the exact end of the root. That way, as we clean and fill the inside of the tooth, we can depend on that precision to make sure we’re working exactly where we want to be. The other benefit for you is that we can take fewer x-rays and provide a more comfortable treatment.

  • One machine we use is the apex locator, which helps locate the tooth’s apex – the end of the root.
  • The apex locator allows us to precisely identify – within half, or even a quarter of a millimeter – the exact end of the root.

  • The other benefit is that fewer x-rays are needed and treatment is more comfortable.

2.) Cone Beams

Some cases are difficult to diagnose, and some patients have had prior root canal treatment. When that happens, we have to determine why the procedure didn’t work the first time. One new technology we use is a Cone Beam CAT Scan Machine. This low-radiation machine allows us to take a 3D image of your tooth or  jaw, and then visually turn your tooth, actually looking inside it to determine whether there are any root fractures. If other canals or anomalies to the anatomy weren’t treated before, we need to work on those.

Because we have the Cone Beam CAT Scan Machine 3D imaging capability, your dentist might refer you to us for a 3D image to guide him in placing an implant into an area where you are losing – or have already lost – a tooth. It’s also helpful if there’s something in your jaw or tooth, about which your dentist wants more information.

Summary:

  • One new technology we use is a Cone Beam CAT Scan Machine, a low-radiation machine that takes a 3D image and visually turns the tooth so we can look inside it and see any root fractures.
  • If other canals or anomalies exist that weren’t treated before, we need to work on those.
  • Because of the Cone Beam CAT Scan Machine’s 3D imaging capability, your dentist may refer you to us for a 3D image to guide him in placing an implant.
  • The 3D image also offers your dentist more information about anything that may be questionable in your jaw or tooth.

3.) X-Rays

Another piece of equipment you’ll find in our office, and one that patients usually get excited about, is the new device we use to take x-rays. Instead of the long pole that used to swing over your head and require everyone to leave the room, we can now hold this instrument, sit next to you and take the x-ray. The scanner and the amount of radiation are both almost zero.

  • Instead of the long overhead pole you’re used to seeing that required everyone to leave the room, we now sit beside you while holding this instrument and take the x-ray.
  • The scanner and the amount of radiation are both almost zero.

4.) Dental Microscope

One thing you can expect to experience at our office is that every procedure, every consultation, every treatment will be done 100% with a dental microscope. Dental microscopes enable us to see more clearly and provide better, more successful treatment outcomes than would be possible if the cases were not done with a microscope.

Summary:

  • At our office, every procedure, every consultation, every treatment is guided 100% by a dental microscope.
  • Dental microscopes enable us to see more clearly and ensure more successful outcomes than would be possible without the microscope.
